Greek media publish analysis on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
Within the framework of cooperation with the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Greece, the newspaper “Eleftheros Typos”, one of the country’s leading outlets, published an article by Dr. Evangelos Venetis, head of the Middle East and Mediterranean Studies Program at the Institute of Strategic Studies “Elisme”. The article, titled “History of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” provides readers with an overview of the conflict’s historical background, legal aspects, and settlement process.
The author emphasized that following the collapse of the USSR, the principle of international law “uti possidetis” granted legitimacy to the preservation of borders of the newly independent republics. In line with this principle, Azerbaijan — including the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region — was recognized within its former administrative borders.
The article also highlighted that these borders were reaffirmed in four UN Security Council resolutions on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, which call for the immediate, complete, and unconditional withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.
